“Thanks to all that organized this challenge you should be incredibly proud at what you inspired and accomplished.”

The ECC Organizing Team has received word that the Sherbrooke Villagers, from Edmonton’s Sherbrooke neighbourhood, will be celebrating their victory in the 1st Annual Edmonton Community Challenge, with a team BBQ and games event in early 2011.

The Sherbrooke Community League has several worthy projects under consideration, and will be putting their $15,000 winnings toward one or more of them. The potential list includes:

- a new community garden or community playground
- a series of art and community projects, such as: sculptures, sign posts, murals, street lights and an outdoor community events board
- tree planting and landscaping efforts
- upgrading an existing sports shack into a green house, tool shed and community sitting area
- building renovations to support better accessibility
- repaving the community league parking area

These ideas will no doubt inspire all of Edmonton’s other community leagues to come out and challenge Sherbrooke in the 2011 event, which is less than six months away!

As the next week goes by, if we get any questions related to the Can It Challenge we will post the answers here for all to see. So if you have any questions just let us know!

Can teams cover cans with coloured construction paper to help achieve their design intent? Yes! Just make sure you leave the original labels intact and that the construction paper is easily removable after the event is finished.

When and where do we go for sign-in/set-up and unloading? Registration is at 9:30am at the SW corner of Churchill Square. Unloading can occur at the SW corner of Churchill Square on 102nd Ave.

In our 10×10 space, how wide can the sculpture go? I know in the description 5′ is the high limit, is that still the case or is it shorter? Do not exceed the 10′ wide limit, and height limit is 5′.

When does the sculpture portion actually start and end? Registration and setup is at 9:30am. We will have a quick welcome and intro at 10:00am, and then sculpture building will start immediately after. Building will end at 3:30pm.

Do the participating team members have to stay until judging time? Not unless you want to see who wins. We do ask that as many members as possible stick around to help dismantle the sculptures.

Can you tell me if the use of a projector will be allowed and whether there will be electricity available? No the use of a projector is not allowed, and we will not have electricity available for the teams.

Can you tell me if our set up area will be outside or inside and if it is outside whether we can bring a 10′ x 10′ sun shelter? This will be weather dependent and will be determined by the organizing committee early that morning based on weather forecasts. If it is raining, we have an indoor area nearby inside the Tix On The Square building. Regardless of weather, all teams are to show up to register and unload their food at the SW corner of Churchill Square. We will have volunteers directing teams and participants of where to set up at the SW corner.

Is there a specific unloading zone for the community leagues or should we be prepared to haul the food donations the distance? The unloading zone will be at the SW corner of Churchill Square, at 100th St and 102nd Ave.

Can teams bring more items for their sculptures throughout the day? Yes teams can bring more items throughout the day, the judging criteria for the sculpture portion is not based on size or number of cans, so even the smallest sculpture could win.

Hello Everyone,

There have been some questions posed about the criteria for the scavenger hunt. As we said at the outset, the scavenger hunt is supposed to be very hard to complete and that we understood that every item would not be attainable. That is why teams are ranked against each other and not scored on a per item basis.

As with all items in the scavenger hunt safety is always paramount. Do not do anything that could cause yourself injury or break the law! We also do not want you to spend and inordinate amount of money on the hunt. If you would like to take a picture of a citadel ticket stub for example, you are welcome to ask a patron leaving the citadel for a copy of their stub and take a photo of it.

The points:

The points are allocated based on each section. The sections are evaluated and then points are allocated. Teams are ranked based on their performance on each section and then they are ranked and points are allocated based on how teams compare against each other. This way effort can be factored into judges decisions.
You do not get points per item, you get points based on your performance in each category compared ranked against the other competing teams.

In section number 2 there are two questions requesting to know how many books are in the EPL Library and the CKUA Library. If you have the answer to these questions you can email them to Michael.janz@efcl.org to be evaluated. You do not have to post them online for everyone else to see!

For all of section 2 you can take photos of the ticket stubs and you are not required to submit any of the souvenirs themselves.

With regard to the Edmonton Bridges, we have told your leagues to be creative but also not to do anything illegal. We are talking about bridges that could be for pedestrians, bikes, cars etc. that are outdoors. We are not talking about a bridge in West Edmonton Mall.

With regard to category number 4, your team can just get dressed up to play hockey or golf with the Oilers, you do not have to contact the actual Edmonton Oilers and skate/participate with them. We would like to see your team dressed up and looking fierce together—this could mean facepaint, home-made logos, flags, whatever you want. Be creative.

Cheers!

Michael Janz
