The Challenge

By registering to join a community league team, individuals will have the chance to demonstrate their energy, creativity, and commitment to a vibrant community.

The 5 key events established for the 2011 Edmonton Community Challenge are: the Photo Scavenger Hunt from May 27th – June 5th, Kick Off Event on June 3rd, “Can It” Challenge on June 4th, Track and Field Day on June 4th, and the Mystery Challenge on June 5th. Check out the Calendar section for a list of these events, dates, and further details.

The Reward

You can gain the most points for your team just by participating! The goal of the Challenge is to encourage participation through a fun, friendly, charitable event, with the winning community league receiving a community fund, as well as individual door prizes for all participants. The 3 teams with the most points by the end of the event will receive a community fund to be used by the Community League they represent for a project that directly benefits the local neighbourhood.

Other great rewards as a result of participating – having fun with your family and friends, getting to know your neighbours, making a difference in your own backyard and in the lives of Edmontonians in need.

Event Information:

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Picture this: your team earning points for taking snapshots with some of Edmonton’s best landmarks and attractions! Get your cameras ready for a week-long Photo Scavenger Hunt, where each letter of the alphabet will take you to a different corner of the city. Each successful photograph will earn you more points in the run for top community league in the 2011 Edmonton Community Challenge. Teams are sure to have fun while getting to know their city at the same time! The photos will be submitted to the ECC via the website ecc.edmontonnextgen.ca. Download the Scavenger Hunt information packages from the website after 12:00pm on May 27th. A break down of point allocation for this event will be provided in this information package.

Date & Time: 12:00pm on May 27, 2011 to 11:59pm on June 3, 2010
Location: city wide
Points: 200 points available

Points:

Teams will receive 5 points per consonant, up to a possible total of 100 points. Teams will receive 15 points per vowel (A, E, I, O, U, Y), up to a possible total of 90 points. Teams will receive 10 bonus points for having at least 10 team members in any one of the required photos. Each team may earn up to a total of 200 points from the Photo Scavenger Hunt.

Event Rules:

Download the Scavenger Hunt information packages from the website after 12:00pm on May 27th. Team captains can upload their photos to the ECC website as they take them, or all at once – as long as they are all submitted by midnight on Friday, June 3rd. Remember to respect all traffic and safety laws, don’t trespass, and have fun!

The Kick Off Event

Come to the Kickoff Event to meet your teammates and gain points for attendance and participation in the design of your team flag! ECC Volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding the events and points system. Food and refreshments will be provided.

“Can It” Challenge

Now that your team has collected a ton of food, how can you have some fun with it? Build a sculpture of course! The “Can It” Challenge will require teams to construct a free-standing sculpture with non-perishable food items. Points will be awarded according to the number of items used, participation numbers as well as an artistic component.

The theme for this challenge is: What is Edmonton and/or The Essence of your Community League.

Items most needed by the Edmonton Food Bank include:

Canned foods (beans, meat, fish, fruit, vegetables), Peanut Butter, Granola bars, Juice boxes, Mac & Cheese, Powered milk, Pasta and pasta sauce, Cereal and Oatmeal, School snack items

Event Rules:

  1. All teams are responsible for acquiring the food needed for their sculpture (through donation drives or food purchase).
  2. All Labels on food items must remain in tact and unaltered.
  3. Sculptures must fit within a 10’ x 10’ area, and be a maximum height of 5 Feet.
  4. For safety reasons, there are a maximum of 5 “builders” permitted at any one time to work within the 10’ x 10’ sculpture area. There can be additional team members working outside of this area during the competition.
  5. All “builders” under the age of 18 working in the sculpture area, must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to participating. Please bring the waiver to the registration table.
  6. There is no limit on the number of people involved in planning, logistics and design; it is encouraged to get more people involved.
  7. Sculptures should be made primarily of unopened canned food, with minimal elements of non-perishable packaged food.
  8. Sculptures must be completely self-supporting. Items such as cardboard, tape etc. can be used to level structures or separate items.
  9. Allowable construction items: cardboard or plastic to lay down, clear packing tape, wire, rubber bands, strings, ropes, fishing line, markers. No gluing, welding or other permanent affixing of cans allowed because the labelling of the items must remain intact after the structure is dismantled. Items not listed will not be allowed in the construction of your team’s structure.
  10. No alcohol, glass containers, pet food, perishable or open packages of food allowed.
  11. There are to be no pre-constructed structures.

Community Cup Challenge

This is no ordinary event. On June 4th starting at 1:30, take part in a variety of thrilling activities with members of your community league to get maximum points in this fun, community-focused day! These events include a combination of competitive and creative activities that will challenge your team and will help you to better connect with your own community. Active team members can look forward to events like Frisbee golf and community relays, while creative types will enjoy painting murals, designing publicity and planning parties for their community league. All activities earn points for your league, and there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the Community Cup!

Most of the Community Cup will take place outdoors, so participants should come dressed appropriately for the weather. Some events will involve mild athletic activity, so comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended.

Points

Teams will be awarded 25 points for each creative event that they take part in. These events will include mural painting, identifying the highlights in your neighbourhood, planning a community league party, and making a flyer to promote your league.

Teams will also be awarded points based on their success in competitive events, which include a Frisbee golf, recycling races, relays, and a trivia challenge. For each of the competitive events, the team that places 1st will receive 25 points; 2nd place will receive 20 points, 3rd place will receive 15 points, 4th place will receive 10 points, and all of the remaining teams that take part will receive 5 points.

With 4 creative events and 4 competitive events, a team may earn up to a total of 200 points from the Community Cup.

Event Rules:

The Community Cup involves 4 creative events and 4 competitive events. There is no preparation required for any of these events, and the rules for each activity will be described on the day of the event. Individuals should come prepared to participate in group activities with their team members, and they should be ready to have fun!

The Mystery Challenge & iHuman Charitable Challenge

Join us on Sunday for the Mystery Challenge! While the details about the event is a secret, we guarantee your league will have a blast while earning up to 100 points for your team.
We will give you one hint: comfy kicks will come in handy!

iHuman Charitable Challenge

Wondering if there is a way you can help iHuman while earning points for your team? Look no further! This is the challenge for you! Listed below is a list of the Top 5 Donations that iHuman needs. The team that racks up the most points in donated items will earn 100 points.

ETS Bus tickets – 5 points per ticket, Snow shovels – 10 points per shovel (new or gently used), Cleaning supplies (cleaning wipes, paper towels, Lysol, sponges) – 2 points per roll/cannister/item, Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, tampons, toilet paper, deodarant, etc) – 2 points per item/box/package, Socks/Scarfs/Touques/Mitts/Gloves/Thermal underwear – 2 points per item/pair
